9th Annual Pomona Beautification Day

On Saturday, April 11th, our Day One Pomona team volunteered their morning to beautify Pomona for the 9th Annual Pomona Beautification Day. 15-20 of us helped with Debra Martin's River Rock project at Ganesha Park, one of the most popular projects of the day. We worked diligently to place rocks atop k-rails, barriers along the edge of the road that are often overlooked. By the end of the day, we transformed concrete barriers into nature-inspired works of art. Afterwards, we tabled at Diamond Plaza, formerly known as Thomas Plaza. Thank you to all our Youth Advocates who volunteered with us, and thank you to the City of Pomona for continuing this annual service day.

Smoke-Free Parks Celebration Kick-Off!

On Thursday, April 2nd, Clean Air Pomona celebrated the first day of smoke-free parks and city facilities at Martin Luther King Park! Around 50 community residents attended our afternoon event, complete with freshly made chicken yucatan tacos, water balloons, and a pinata. It was a beautiful opportunity for CAP to highlight our amazing youth who have worked hard for the past 3 years to achieve this step towards a healthier, cleaner city. Also present were Councilmembers Debra Martin and Adriana Robledo, as well as PUSD School Board member Frank Guzman, all of whom helped make this happen. Thank you to all who have supported CAP throughout the years. Achieving a smoke-free parks and city facilities ordinance was truly a community-driven effort and we were happy to celebrate with everyone!

City of Pomona Adopts Local Smoke-Free Parks Policy

Success! On March 2nd, 2015, the Pomona City Council unanimously amended its existing smoking ordinance to restrict smoking of any kind at city parks and other city facilities.

The smoking policy, which includes the use of electronic smoking devices, will take effect 30 days after approval by the city council. All parks in Pomona will officially be smoke-free as of April 2nd, 2015.

The policy was adopted as a result of numerous local complaints from residents regarding smoking at city hall, city facilities, and local parks. CAP was on hand to educate the community about the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and the many benefits of smoke-free public places.

Thanks to our efforts, Pomona now joins 39 other cities across Los Angeles County who have banned smoking at parks, along with 328 cities and counties in California who have done the same. Thank you to all our supporters, especially our youth, who have been at the forefront of these efforts.

Day One hosted a booth at this years Cesar Chavez Pilgrimage community event where residents, community organizations, council members, and Hilda Solis were able to ask questions and get informed on the campaigns Day One is working on in Pomona.

Day One participated in the 8th annual Pomona Beautification Day event. The morning started with a park clean up at Ganesha park and gardening at Tri-City therapeutic Garden followed by a resource fair at the Fairplex to disseminate information about our initiatives and projects going on the city of Pomona.

"Divergent" Screening at TCL Chinese Theatre

CAP members, along with other Day One Youth Advocates, visited the TLC Chinese Theater for a special screening of Summit Entertainment's "Divergent" on March 8th. Duarte, Pasadena and Pomona coalition members were able to meet for the first time and have fun exploring the Walk of Fame and the Hollywood & Highland shopping center.

Park Clean up at MLK

CAP gave back to its community on Martin Luther King Jr. day by cleaning MLK park in Pomona. 40+ youth gave up their day off from school to beautify their school neighboring park so that they, and others, can enjoy a clean community park. The day was filled with youth picking up trash left on the group all around the park followed by a small BBQ for their efforts and a friendly game of soccer. The spontaneity filled park got attention by local residents and was soon filled by families that took advantage of the beautiful weather.

CAP and it's wonderful members represented the need for clean air at Pomona's annual Holiday at the Plaza Parade. The rain was no match for our youth advocates that showed up throughout the day to part take in the parade or distribute information at our CAP booth at civic plaza.

Walking to fight strokes

The American Heart Association hosted a Heart Walk at the Fair Plex on Sunday October 13. CAP was their bright and early to support the victims of stroke and heart disease and also got our hearts pumping!

CAP was able to participate in this years Pomona Day Parade at the Los Angeles County Fair. Our wonderful coalition represented with a custom made Clean Air Pomona banner that raised the awareness of who we are and what we're trying to do!
